Cardinal Donald Wuerl’s name is no longer included in North Catholic High School, Bishop David Zubik announced Wednesday. According to a grand jury report about sexual abuse in six Pennsylvania dioceses released last week, Wuerl reassigned priests accused of sexual abuse while he was bishop in Pittsburgh from 1998 to 2006. Following the report, an online petition called for removing Wuerl’s name from the school. On Monday, the school’s sign was vandalized, with paint over his name. According to Zubik, Wuerl, now archbishop in D.C., sent a letter to the diocese last week asking for the name change. “He said he did not want anything to stand in the way of what would happen at the school, especially for the continuing education of the students,” the current bishop said.
